October was Breast Cancer Awareness month and I had the opportunity to participate in a very unique fundraiser named, Barbells for Boobs. This was my second year participating in the event at CrossFit Mt. Lebanon which was organized by our wonderful coach Suzy Ireland. "Barbells For Boobs" was founded when Cecy Morales, at 26 years-old, detected irregularities in her breasts. Upon this discovery Cecy was denied screening services and simply advised by medical professionals to come back upon turning 40. Cecy persisted and was screened only to find that she was in the midst of stage 0 (DCIS) breast cancer. Her friend, Zionna Hanson decided that the answers Cecy was given were unacceptable and Barbells for Boobs was born.[1] This was my second year participating in the event. Last year we did a workout named 'Grace' which consisted of thirty clean and jerks. Originally, I planned on increasing my weight from 55 pounds from last year to 65 or 75 pounds this year, but when I learned that we were doing 'Burping Grace' instead of just plain old 'Grace' I decided to stick with 55 pounds. 'Burping Grace' consisted of 10 clean and jerks followed by 10 burpees over the bar. Repeat that 3 times and you have 'Burping Grace'! [1] https://www.barbellsforboobs.org/our-story/ Pretty quickly I realized that "Burping Grace" was a lot more painful than "Grace". It took me around 5 minutes and 37 seconds to finish this workout. It was a tough one! Even though last month was Breast Cancer Awareness month, anyone affected by cancer knows that cancer is not limited to one month. Cancer patients, family members and friends are affected by cancer year round. For more information on Breast Cancer please read the graphic below provided by Bankers Healthcare Group. Bankers Healthcare Group, if you haven't heard of them before, is a company whose sole purpose is to provide physician loans to medical professionals; many of whom use this money to purchase equipment that can be used for early detection of diseases like Breast Cancer.
